WHAT:
Hey Chicas! So today, I bring you Style Ramen–you remember those 99-cent packets of crunchy noodles you just added boiled water to and ‘poof!’–you had some semblance of food? Well a good pair of sunglasses can give you a dose of insta-style with just as little effort. Now, I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the days of the Nicole Richie face-swallowing shades are over. Gasp! I know…the truth hurts. But big is so passé. This year, it’s all about sleek, structured and cool. Enter: aviators.
Every power diva under the sun has embraced this bad-ass look, from Rihanna to Bey to Posh Spice. I mean, really–what’s not to love about the fashion statement, “Take it to another level, no passenger on my plane!”
WHERE:
HOW:
The how is simple. Because aviators are technically menswear-inspired, they’re highlighted best when you rock them with one of the hard-soft extremes: either the sleek, structured menswear look (blazer or leather jacket, jeans, gladiator heels), or the contrasting flowy, feminine look (summer dress or mini skirt with a tank). You don’t need much in the way of earrings since the glasses pack such “oomph!”, but I personally think big hair or a slick ponytail complements the shades best.
EASY-LIVING TIP:
We’ve all pondered the question a million times. We’ve debated it with friends and family; we’ve experienced that “woe is me” feeling because we can’t seem to get a handle on it. The age-old riddle: “How am I supposed to figure out what I want to do with my life?” As someone fortunate enough to know exactly what she wants to do, I am here to shout it from the rooftops: finding your calling has nothing to do with luck! The answer does not just fall into your lap one day. Just like anything worthwhile you’ve ever achieved (graduating from college, that 4-year relationship, learning how to blow out your own hair, etc.), finding your dream job takes time, dedication, and deep thought. I truly believe that the main thing holding people back from their destinies is the expectation of some Godly sign. If you have the gumption to take things into your own hands, here are some great tips to get you closer to your epiphany:
1. Sit down and make a list of all of the things you used to love to do, from childhood on up. Think long and hard, and don’t dismiss anything as “childish.” Legos and coloring could be the key to a job in architecture!
2. Now sit and think about the compliment that you’ve received the most throughout your life. In other words, are people always praising your great sense of style? Your sense of humor? Your consistently upbeat attitude? Write it down.
3. Make a list of jobs that require the quality that you are most esteemed for. If people always point out your positive attitude, careers like teacher, motivational speaker, politician, news anchor, counselor, sales person might all be possibilities. Really try to think outside of the box here and don’t dismiss anything just yet.
4. From this list of careers, try to determine which ones would use the skill sets you listed in your hobbies from list number one.
5. Get thee to the bookstore or library and find a book on each one of these fields. Skim it. Get to know what you’re really in store for (your daily responsibilities, your salary, your room for growth) so you don’t have false expectations.
6. Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few options that seem appealing to you, contact people in the field and speak to them about their experiences. Learn the positives and negatives. Even books can be misleading–you need to know how things really are, preferably from someone who has at least 5 years experience.
7. If one particular field peaks your interest, ask if you can come in and shadow someone for a day or week. Offer to be his or her free assistant.
8. If you find the job is not what it was cracked up to be, don’t give up! Rinse and repeat! There is a truly fulfilling career out there for you, but you have to find it. So go on! Your happiness depends on it!
